The Gladys School of Community Health Work and Development is the academic arm of Nest and propagates a particular vision .
It faces the ocean, next to Nest’s Kare House, a Community Health Centre.
The Gladys School extends the frontiers of community work and development, including the much neglected aspect of improving mental wellbeing. The School recognizes that better understanding of many things is required to improve our community life. So it hopes to provide formal courses that contribute to improved understanding of issues relevant to community development. And it also hopes to provide opportunities and inducements to translate this into real life action. Many subjects relevant to daily life are not dealt with in educational courses and we hope the School will be able to bring some of these to attention. It’s rare for people of any age to travel around Sri Lanka to experience different cultures and habits and how they harmonise. Some courses at least must go beyond rigid adherence to a pre-set syllabus dealt with in reading and writing exercises and not in observation and discussion. A game of table tennis at the lunch break or a walk along a beach early in the morning before the course starts is hardly ever included.
Many of the courses will be for what happens during rather than at the end. Ten courses are on the menu and more will evolve and grow. We hope that each type of course will benefit from being together with very different ones:
1. Joy of Cooking
. Ethics for Community Health Workers
3. Institutionalisation - its harm, and many other courses such as
4. Tamil Language
5. English Language

The way to the Gladys School
It would be difficult to find in our country a more beautiful and healthier place to study, learn and share knowledge.
At times when traffic is not heavy, it takes 25 minutes to drive to the Gladys School from the heart of Colombo. One can either approach Palliyewatta from Colombo through Kotahena and along Aluthwatte, or from the main Colombo - Katunayake Road. On the Katunayake road, turn left towards Hendela/Elakanda and cross the Hamilton Canal (Friendship Bridge) to get to Palliyewatta. Pass the ancient Palliyawatta Catholic Church on your right, and as you see the sea turn right and travel along the coast in the direction of the Pegasus Reef Hotel (cul de sac). There is a Trishaw stand at the Wattala junction or at the Friendship Briodge (if one takes the 260 bus) there is a less frequent bus service from Wattala to Palliyawatta Church and another bus to Beach Road.
