The Training of Community Health Workers
Nest has trained men and women to be active in various parts of the country helping people to deal with medical and social, particularly mental health crises.
Because of its size, competency and its humane philosophy, it has the flexibility to intervene both in an informal and formal manner.
Training for staff is ongoing and compulsory. The unique training style ensures that Community Health Workers blend effortlessly into their working environment.
TRAINING
Dr. Diyanath Samarasinghe, Patron of Nest, and Consultant Psychiatrist, University of Colombo Medical Faculty, is also Nest’s Honorary Director of Training. He spends time with the community health workers once a month at Kåre House. Staff are trained to motivate communities to take an interest in their district as well as their community and home. Emphasis is on a healthy way of living both for staff and the people they reach. As many who have met Nest’s community health workers say, ‘the best way to experience Nest’s style of training is to get to know a member of staff’.The manual, which harnesses the complete programme, is called ‘The Community Health Workers’ Training Manual. Sally Hulugalle and Harini Amarasuriya are the authors. It describes the methods of training which have given Nest its unique style and manner.
